PAU, France (AP) ? The RadioShack Nissan Trek team pulled Frank Schleck, one of the biggest names in pro cycling, out the Tour de France on Tuesday after he failed a doping test, threatening to overshadow Bradley Wiggins' bid to win the three-week race in Paris this weekend.

The 32-year-old rider from Luxembourg, who was third in last year's Tour, left a police station in Pau where he had discussed the case with authorities after cycling's governing body announced the positive test.

The International Cycling Union, or UCI, said Schleck had tested positive for banned diuretic Xipamide in an anti-doping test conducted by a French anti-doping lab on a sample taken from him on July 14.

It marked the second doping scandal to hit this Tour, and was another reminder of the doping cloud that has damaged the image of cycling and its biggest event for years.

Schleck, the RadioShack leader, had been in 12th place overall ? 9 minutes, 45 seconds behind leader Wiggins ? going into the second and latter rest day on Tuesday.

The revelation was likely to add stress on the crash-and sickness-depleted pack, just as they were gearing up for two grueling days in the Pyrenees starting Wednesday.

Wiggins, who is aiming to become Britain's first Tour champion, leads fellow Briton and Sky teammate Christopher Froome by 2:05 and Vincenzo Nibali of Italy by 2:23. Defending champion Cadel Evans of Australia is fourth, 3:19 behind.

Competitors in the 99th Tour had plenty of time to ponder the tricky 16th and 17th stages on the rest day, with the Pyrenees visible on the horizon from the medieval, palm tree-lined city of Pau.

Wednesday's stage runs through the so-called "Circle of Death" along four brutal climbs ? none more daunting than the 7,000-foot Tourmalet. On Thursday, the last summit finishes atop the 5,300-foot Peyragudes.

Wiggins is talking a big game in his bid to become Britain's first Tour de France champion. He says Wednesday's stage "isn't any more difficult than any other stage we've done up to this stage, really."

Wiggins said the Tourmalet was nothing special.

"It goes uphill like all the others, doesn't it?" he said.

The four renowned passes the riders will climb Wednesday are the Peyresourde, Aubisque, Aspin and Tourmalet, the highest point on this year's Tour. The pack on Thursday must ascend the Col de Mente and Port de Bales before scaling Peyragudes.

"Generally, the Pyrenees are a bit harder than the Alps," said U.S. cyclist Tejay van Garderen. "The roads are a bit rougher. They're just a bit more taxing."

But the more immediate question for the whole pack was how it would surmount cycling's latest positive test for doping ? this time at the heart of a well-known cycling family and one of its big-name teams.

The RadioShack team said in a statement that it had decided to withdraw Schleck from the race, and said that the diuretic is not present in any medicine used by the team.

The statement said "the reason for the presence of Xipamide in the urine sample of Mr. Schleck is unclear to the team. Therefore, the team is not able to explain the adverse findings at this point."

Team spokesman Philippe Maertens said Schleck went to the Pau police station of his own accord to cooperate with authorities. Maertens said the rider knew police would likely be coming for him.

Maertens said the team is likely to ask for the "B'' sample to be analyzed. That request must come within the next four days, according to the UCI.

"If it comes back positive he will be suspended by the team," Maertens said.

He added that police did not search the riders' rooms at the hotel, and that RadioShack will continue to compete in the race, he said.

Still, it was more bad news for the RadioShack squad, which was built on the remains of former teams of Lance Armstrong, who helped land the top-line sponsorship of the American retail chain for the team.

The team manager, Johan Bruyneel, has been targeted in the same U.S. anti-doping case targeting the seven-time Tour champion. Bruyneel opted to skip the Tour to avoid being a distraction to the race and RadioShack riders.

Schleck's younger brother and RadioShack teammate, Andy, was awarded the 2010 Tour victory after Alberto Contador was stripped of the title over his positive test for clenbuterol.

The younger Schleck is missing this year's race because of a spinal injury.

The case is also likely to cast new doubt on cycling's ability to root out drug cheats despite vigorous controls put in place by the UCI and its allies in the anti-doping fight.

It is the second doping-related case to emerge at the Tour this year. Cofidis rider Remy Di Gregorio of France was arrested on the first rest day on July 10 as part of a Marseille doping probe.

The diuretic is classified as a specified substance and does not require a provisional suspension. The World Anti-Doping Agency defines specified substances as those that are "more susceptible to a credible, non-doping explanation." Bans for such substances are often shorter, and athletes have a better chance of proving that they did not intend to consume it or enhance their performance.

Contacted by phone by The Associated Press in Mondorf-les-Bains, Luxembourg, Frank's 36-year-old brother Steve said he had tried to contact the RadioShack rider by phone but was not successful.

"We're a little bit shaken up," Steve Schleck said.

AIG Frustrates Mortgage Refinancing Plan

Obama administration officials and lawmakers say AIG's mortgage insurer is hampering efforts to refinance government-insured mortgages by refusing to automatically waive its right to go after lenders for loans that sour.

An analysis by the Financial Times reveals that borrowers whose loans are guaranteed by the AIG unit, United Guaranty, are less likely to benefit from the Home Affordable Refinance Program than are homeowners who have loans with the four closest competitors. Mortgage insurers MGIC, Radian, Genworth, and PMI Financial all agree to automatically waive many of their rights to challenge payouts on loans that are refinanced under HARP but then redefault.

Skip a stone on a mountain lake from your desk

29 min.

Stuck in a cubicle but wish you were in the mountains skipping stones? So do I. And now we can, sort of, thanks to a promotional robot sitting on the side of a lake in Sun Valley, Idaho, waiting for you to play with it.

To do so, surf over to www.stoneskippingrobot.com?and?tell Skippy how hard and in what angle to fling the stone.?Skippy will do the rest. Just sit back and watch your stone skip across an idyllic mountain?lake.

Skippy was built by Eleven Inc., a San Francisco-based marketing firm hired?to help the resort town attract visitors.

"This place truly sells itself if you're here," Daniel Murphy, director of interactive production for Eleven, told me today via satellite phone from Sun Valley?where he is managing the Skip Town campaign.

"It is everything you imagined about the great American wilderness ... we just needed to bring it to the people."

That's how the idea for?Skippy was born.

The robot is "a heavily modified clay pigeon thrower," said?M David Low, a creative technologist for Eleven, who is also in Sun Valley.

Instead of clay pigeons, it throws stones, for one. Skippy is controlled by the Arduino platform. Users set the angle and power for their stone toss. Given the remoteness of Skippy's location (a private lake outside of Sun Valley), there's a slight lag in communications, Low noted.

The skips are all recorded in real time. As soon as your stone is skipped, you get kicked to a results page where you can relive and share the the video of your skip.

So far, "thousands" of people have skipped stones, Murphy said, and tens of thousands have visited the campaign website. Some of those visitors may not be skipping their own stones given the long line.

For those city folk too impatient to wait in line, you can watch Skippy skip the?stones of others or view the video below to learn more about the campaign.

The folks in Sun Valley, of course, want this experience to whet your appetite for a real mountain vacation. You can register to win a trip as you wait for your turn to skip. Having spent nearly a decade of my life there, I can say it's certainly worth a visit.

Sam Hornish Jr. to sub for suspended AJ Allmendinger at New Hampshire - NASCAR News | FOX Sports on MSN

Updated?Jul 9, 2012 12:38 PM ET

?

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)

Penske Racing will use Sam Hornish Jr. this weekend at New Hampshire as the team waits for more information on suspended driver AJ Allmendinger.

Allmendinger was suspended by NASCAR for failing a random drug test and has until Tuesday to ask for his ''B'' sample to be tested. Penske Racing said in a statement Monday it is working with NASCAR to ''follow its process and procedures.''

Allmendinger was suspended shortly before Saturday night's race at Daytona, where NASCAR officials were informed that his June 29 random test had come back positive.

NASCAR and Penske officials have not said what Allmendinger tested positive for, and Allmendinger has made no statement since his suspension.

Hornish was the emergency substitute for Allmendinger on Saturday night. He was pulled off a television set in North Carolina, where he was an analyst on a live broadcast, and flew to Daytona International Speedway. Hornish arrived right before the start of the race. A cut tire contributed to his 33rd-place finish.

Hornish is the natural replacement for Allmendinger, who is in his first season with Penske Racing. Allmendinger was hired in late December after the team suddenly split with Kurt Busch.

The 30-year-old former open-wheel driver got the No. 22 seat over Hornish, who joined the NASCAR part of the organization after moving from IndyCar following the 2007 season. Hornish struggled through three full Sprint Cup seasons but spent most of last year out of the car. He made only one Cup start and ran 13 Nationwide races.

This season, Penske has Hornish running the full Nationwide schedule. He has nine top-10 finishes and is fourth in the standings. But he wants to be back in the Cup Series, and was pleased to get the call Saturday to get back to Daytona, where he had finished 10th in Friday night's Nationwide race.

Hornish said it was his first time driving a Shell/Pennzoil car since 2003 in IndyCar. Shell sponsors the No. 22 car, and the company has not commented since the suspension.

Allmendinger is the second Sprint Cup Series driver suspended since NASCAR implemented its drug policy in 2009. Jeremy Mayfield contested his 2009 suspension, lost his fight in court and has not raced since.

According to Allmendinger's Twitter feed, he was appearing on behalf of sponsor Shell/Pennzoil less than two hours before the suspension was announced at 6 p.m. Saturday

NASCAR clarified the timelines Sunday, saying its medical review officer first alerted Allmendinger of his positive test about six hours earlier. NASCAR was informed by the officer about 2:30 p.m. and met with Allmendinger and a senior Penske official shortly after. The suspension was announced 30 minutes after the driver meeting.

Just two weeks ago, Penske officials were adamant that Allmendinger was in line for a contract extension. Now, the suspension puts Allmendinger's future in jeopardy.

Shell has been pleased with Allmendinger's representation, and Penske officials likened his struggles this season to those of Brad Keselowski, who had a rough 2010 first season with the team but last year produced three wins and a berth in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

The 20 worst-named phones and tablets

11 hrs.

These days it?s just not good enough to give your phone or tablet an unassuming name like the RX-5050 or M3420e. Instead, mobile device makers spend their days masterminding memorable monikers that are supposed to generate buzz. More often, though, they cause static or confusion. Here are the very worst of the lot.

Ainovo Novo7 Swordman
Like a knock-off breakfast cereal made by "Keylogs," the Ainovo brand sounds like it was designed to fool shoppers into thinking they're getting a Lenovo. But because one "novo" in the name is one too few, the Chinese OEM that makes this cheap tablet added another one for good measure. Don't ask us what the Swordman part means. Though we haven?t crossed blades with this slate, the more boring Ainovo Novo7 Basic's creaky plastic casing and slow speeds didn't impress.

HP Veer 4G
Generally speaking, you don?t want to name a gadget after something that happens right before a traffic accident. Unfortunately for HP, the name of its first webOS smartphone was particularly prescient. After users passed this disaster of a handset, the company veered away from its entire mobile strategy and hit a wall.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1
In a bow to Arithmomaniacs, Samsung gives you 200 percent more model numbers than its main competitor and separates them with just an empty space ? no dashes or commas here. Even better, the number 2 is a homonym for "too." The store clerk could hear, "I want a Galaxy Tab too, 10.1," and give you last year?s model instead.

LG Lucid
While other Android phones may drunk-dial your ex girlfriends without permission, LG?s $79 handset remains clear-headed even when you load it down with lots of apps. Even better, the Lucid can download your email while in a sleep state, a form of "Lucid" dreaming.

HP TouchPad
Hewlett Packard?s abortive attempt at a webOS slate was a failure from the moment the company picked its name. The moniker?meisters in Palo Alto seemed blissfully unaware that "touchpad" has been used to describe the pointing device on notebooks (including HP?s) for ages. Consumers may have thought that the short-lived slate, which was pulled from the market after just 57 days, was just a peripheral. Or maybe they noticed the lack of apps, sluggish performance and ugly design.

Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch
With almost as many names as Sean Combs, the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch is the world?s most tongue-twisty telephone. Though the same handset was simply called the Galaxy S II on most other carriers, Sprint felt compelled to tack on three extra words just for its version. The word ?Epic? honored the older Epic 4G. And 4G and Touch were added because you just can?t overstate the obvious enough. Up next: the Samsung Galaxy S III Epic Surfs Web and Does Lots of Other Stuff.

The new iPad
Some companies want to deny history and act as if their new product was the only one of its kind. By naming its third-generation iPad simply "the iPad," Apple committed a grave crime both against search engine optimization and common sense. Try doing a search for "Apple iPad" and you might get results for the 2012 model and the 2010 original. Uninitiated users also will see the iPad 2 and think that it?s newer than the "new iPad" because it actually has a version number. And just wait until "the new new iPad" comes out in 2013!

Samsung Rant
The first rule of gadget naming is "Don't insult your customers." There's a reason Hostess will never come out with a snack cake called "Gorge" and Panasonic won't name a TV "the Vegetate." However, Samsung did come out with a slider phone called the Rant in 2008, effectively telling its users that they were nothing more than a bunch of blowhards who like to hear the sound of their own texts arriving.
