Another fish barrier removed - South Sound - The Olympian ...

Coho, cutthroat trout, steelhead and other fish will have an easier time migrating in a small stream that flows out of Capitol Forest to the Black River, thanks to a state program that aids small-forestland owners with removal of barriers that block fish.

The $130,000 project this week to replace a fish-blocking road culvert with a small bridge across Goliath Creek frees up more than four miles of upstream fish habitat. It?s a prime example of the kind of work the state Department of Natural Resources and its partners are poised to do.

Since 2003, some 232 fish barriers ? usually road culverts ? have been eliminated on nonindustrial timberland, returning some 500 miles of stream habitat to migrating salmon and trout through the state Department of Natural Resource?s Family Forest Fish Passage Program.

The $17 million program investment to date is about to jump significantly: The state Legislature included $10 million for the program when it passed a $1 billion jobs bills this year.

DNR officials want forest property owners to know this is a good time to apply for a chunk of money, anywhere from $50,000 to $150,000 to tackle troublesome forest road crossings. Eligible applicants face few, if any, out-of-pocket costs.

It?s habitat-improvement work landowners would likely have to do if they applied for a timber harvest permit. Removal of fish barriers associated with forest roads is a key component of the Forest and Fish Act approved by the Legislature in 1999.

The program recognizes how onerous the costs of complying with the landmark act can be to small-land owners.

?The jobs bill was a huge shot in the arm for the program,? said DNR program manager Rick Kuykendall. He said the state agency, working with the state Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Recreation and Conservation Office and a host of project sponsors ? including tribes, salmon enhancement groups and conservation districts ? hope to complete nearly 100 projects statewide in the next two years.

To be eligible, landowners can harvest on average no more than 2 million board-feet of timber per year, which is the equivalent of a 40-acre clear-cut, he said.

DNR has a backlog of 400 applications, but knows from fish barrier studies that they are just scratching the surface.

In the Chehalis River watershed alone, which is the second-largest in the state, there are an estimated 1,500 miles of blocked fish habitat, said Jamie Glasgow, director of science and research for the Olympia-based Wild Fish Conservancy, the group overseeing the Goliath Creek project for DNR.

From its headwaters in Capitol Forest, Goliath Creek flows into Mima Creek, which flows into the Black River within the Chehalis River watershed.

?There?s a huge need to restore fish habitat in this watershed,? Glasgow said. ?We?re working on just a fraction of the habitat that the fish historically had access to.?

The Goliath Creek project, on a 10-acre parcel owned by Steve Baker of Roy, included a short stream rechanneling effort to place the new bridge. In less than two days, Glasgow and his co-workers had recovered 36 juvenile coho salmon from a small pond created by the stream diversion. They also found 15 freshwater mussels, which is an indicator of good water quality.

?This is a very productive stretch of stream,? Glasgow said.

State Department of Fish and Wildlife biologist Laura Till described Goliath Creek as a high priority project that will open up top notch spawning habitat for coho, cutthroat and steelhead.

The new bridge also will reduce flooding at the road crossing. In the past, it was not uncommon to find fish on the road during heavy storms, Till said.

Logging roads that rely on stream culverts tend to suffer more storm damage, require more maintenance and lead to degraded water quality, Till said.

Overweight children aged 12 to 19 are 59% more likely than normal-weight kids to take prescription medication, according to UAlberta research

(Edmonton) Overweight children are far more likely to take prescription medications than children of a normal weighta trend that adds to already higher health-care costs for treating childhood obesity, according to new research from the University of Alberta.

Researchers from the School of Public Health analyzed the medication use of more than 2,000 Canadian children through the 2007 to 2009 Canadian Health Measures Survey. They found that overweight and obese kids aged 12 to 19 years were 59 per cent more likely than their normal-weight peers to take prescription medication.

Co-author Christina Fung said prescription drug expenditures have doubled over the past decade and now account for 17 per cent of health-care costs in Canadathe second highest after hospital expenses. Having a more complete picture helps governments and health-care providers direct spending more effectively, she said.

"Overweight and obese patients are more expensive to the health-care system in terms of using medication and prescription drugs," she said. "In Canada, we have a public health-care system, and this is an issue of accountability and where health-care dollars are spent, and when."

The study also showed that overweight and obese children were twice as likely to take medication for respiratory ailments such as asthma and allergies.

Co-author Paul Veugelers, Canada Research Chair in Population Health, said the data show that governments need to direct more attention to prevention. Childhood obesity rates have tripled in Canada over the last 25 years, and an estimated 34 per cent of kids aged two to 17 are now overweight or obese.

"By investing in prevention in kidspromotion of healthy eating and active livingthere's an immediate payback in terms of health-care costs," said Veugelers, a professor and director of the Population Health Intervention Research Unit that works with the Alberta Project Promoting active Living and healthy Eating (APPLE Schools).

"Children who are not overweight are less likely to develop diabetes, or 30 to 40 years later get a heart attack or end up with cancer. Forty years from now you see a real return in terms of health-care costs."

The results showed little difference in medication use among children aged six to 11. Veugelers hypothesized that this finding could indicate that a prolonged lifestyle of unhealthy eating and physical inactivity is needed before children need additional medication.

High-Arctic heat tops 1,800-year high, says study; Modern spike outmatches naturally driven 'medieval warm period'

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Summers on the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard are now warmer than at any other time in the last 1,800 years, including during medieval times when parts of the northern hemisphere were as hot as, or hotter, than today, according to a new study in the journal Geology.

"The Medieval Warm Period was not as uniformly warm as we once thought--we can start calling it the Medieval Period again," said the study's lead author, William D'Andrea, a climate scientist at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. "Our record indicates that recent summer temperatures on Svalbard are greater than even the warmest periods at that time."

The naturally driven Medieval Warm Period, from about 950 to 1250, has been a favorite time for people who deny evidence that humans are heating the planet with industrial greenhouse gases. But the climate reconstruction from Svalbard casts new doubt on that era's reach, and undercuts skeptics who argue that current warming is also natural. Since 1987, summers on Svalbard have been 2 degrees to 2.5 degrees C (3.6 to 4.5 degrees F) hotter than they were there during warmest parts of the Medieval Warm Period, the study found.

Researchers produced the 1,800 year climate record by analyzing levels of unsaturated fats in algae buried in the sediments of Kongressvatnet lake, in western Svalbard. In colder water, algae make more unsaturated fats, or alkenones; in warmer water, they produce more saturated fats. Like pages in a book, the unsaturation level of fats can provide a record of past climate. So far, most Arctic climate records have come from ice cores that preserve only annual layers of cold-season snowfall, and thus cold-season temperatures. But lake sediments, with their record of summertime temperatures, can tell scientists how climate varied the rest of the year and in places where ice sheets are absent.

"We need both ice core and lake sediment records," said Elisabeth Isaksson, a glaciologist at the Norwegian Polar Institute who was not involved in the study. "Here, Billy has found something that tells a different, more detailed story."

In looking at how summers on Svalbard varied, researchers also discovered that the region was not particularly cold during another recent anomalous period--the "Little Ice Age" of the 18th and 19th centuries, when glaciers on Svalbard surged to their greatest extent in the last 10,000 years and glaciers in many parts of Western Europe also grew.They suggest that more snow, rather than colder temperatures, may have fed the growth of Svalbard glaciers.

Evidence from tree rings and ice cores shows that southern Greenland and parts of North America were warmer from 950 to 1250 than today, with the Vikings taking advantage of ice-free waters to settle Greenland. Some regions also saw prolonged drought, including California, Nevada and the Mississippi Valley, leading some scientists to coin the term Medieval Climate Anomaly to emphasize the extreme shift in precipitation rather than temperature. A natural increase in solar radiation during this time was responsible for warming parts of the northern hemisphere, with a rise in volcanic activity from 1100 to 1260 causing milder winters, University of Massachusetts scientist Ray Bradley explained in a 2003 Perspective piece in Science. Bradley is a co-author of the Svalbard lake sediment study.

Western Svalbard began to gradually warm in 1600, the researchers found, when the northern arm of the Gulf Stream, known as the West Spitsbergen Current, may have brought more tropical water to the region. In 1890, the warming began to accelerate, with researchers attributing most of the warming since about 1960 to rising industrial greenhouse gas levels. Ice cores from Svalbard, by contrast, show a slight cooling over the last 1,800 years. The conflicting evidence suggests that temperatures may have fluctuated more sharply between winter and summer, said Anne Hormes, a quaternary geologist at the University Centre in Svalbard who was not involved in the study.

D'Andrea and his colleagues dated their lake cores by analyzing grains of glass spewed by volcanoes hundreds of miles away in Iceland. Those past eruptions-- Sn?fellsj?kullin 170, Hekla in 1104 and ?r?faj?kull in 1362 -- all left unique chemical time markers on Svalbard's lake sediments. "We know fairly precisely when these eruptions occurred, which is rare in the geologic record," said study co-author Nicholas Balascio, a scientist at University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Recent temperature measurements show that the Arctic is warming twice as fast as the rest of the planet, with sea ice this summer shrinking to its smallest extent on record. Natural feedbacks are amplifying the warming as loss of reflective sea ice causes the ocean to absorb more of the sun's energy, melting more sea ice, which causes more energy absorption, and so on. Climate models suggest that by 2100 Svalbard will warm more than any other landmass on earth, due to a combination of sea-ice loss and changes in atmospheric and oceanic circulation, according to the International Panel on Climate Change 2007 report. In a study published last year in the journal Advances in Meteorology, Norwegian researchers estimate that average winter temperature in Svalbard could rise by as much as 10 degrees C, or 18 degrees Fahrenheit.

The study was funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation and the Keck Geology Consortium.
