TOKYO ? Police have arrested a woman claiming to have lived with a senior member of the doomsday cult behind a series of deadly crimes that culminated in the 1995 nerve gas attack on Tokyo's subways.
Police and a lawyer for Akemi Saito said she turned herself in Tuesday after the New Year's Eve surrender of Makoto Hirata.
Lawyer Taro Takimoto said Saito was with Hirata most of his 17 years on the run and became his common-law wife. Police charged her with aiding a fugitive, but the lawyer said such charges do not apply to common-law couples.
Both were members of the cult Aum Shinrikyo, and Hirata is suspected of involvement in a cult-related kidnapping-murder in 1995. The sarin gas attack later that year killed 13 and injured more than 6,000.
