Harrison Ford is set to return as Han Solo in Star Wars: Episode VII
"Never tell me the odds!"Harrison Ford has officially signed to reprise one of the most iconic characters in sci-fi history. That's right, the actor, who became famous playing Han Solo in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, is returning as the Corellian smuggler with a heart of gold who reluctantly joins the Rebel Alliance to win the heart of a princess in Star Wars: Episode VII directed by J.J. Abrams
The news hasn't yet been confirmed by Disney and Lucasfilm, with this casting announcement coming once again from El Mayimbe of Latino Review. No further details have been announced at this time. El Mayimbe dropped the news on Fox News Latino.
When Star Wars: Episode VII is released in theaters May of 2015, it will have been nearly 40 years since Harrison Ford originated one of the Star Wars universe's most beloved characters. Ford went onto play Han Solo in Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi.
In the extended universe novels, which used to be considered franchise cannon, Solo eventually married Princess Leia and had three children with her, twins Jaina and Jacen and son Anakin. The twins grow up to be Jedi, with son Anakin getting killed at a young age. Han's loyal sidekick Chewbacca also dies, which sends Solo into a deep depression and away from his family. He eventually accepts the loss of his son and best friend, and reconciles with the rest of his estranged family.
It has never been confirmed, but it has been strongly suggested that the extended universe novels will not be used in creating the storyline of this new trilogy. Its unlikely that they will kill off a character as loved as Chewbacca, since he has the ability to age indefinitely and he can be used for other movies. Harrison Ford, on the other hand, always wanted to see his character die at the end of Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi. He may get his wish with this new trilogy.
It is heavily rumored, yet not yet confirmed, that an Untitled Star Wars Han Solo Spin-Off is also in the works, which would focus on the character's origins as a smuggler and serve as a prequel to the original trilogy. It has been hinted that Harrison Ford will also return as Han Solo in this stand alone film to bookend the adventure, much like Elijah Wood has done with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and its next two films.
We'll have more information about Harrison Ford's return as Han Solo in Star Wars: Episode VII as the news breaks.
