Ghana opposition ponders contesting poll results

ACCRA, Ghana (AP) ? Opposition leader Nana Akufo-Addo says his party will make a decision Tuesday on whether to contest the results of the weekend election which was won by President John Dramani Mahama.

Official results said Mahama won with 50.7 percent of the vote, while Akufo-Addo had 47.7 percent. Akufo-Addo's and his New Patriotic Party charge that voting discrepancies robbed them of victory.

Akufo-Addo told The Associated Press that he will meet with his party leaders Tuesday and then announce if he will accept the election. He said members of his New Patriotic Party are compiling data from polling stations in order to compare it to the published results.

Observers are concerned that Ghana's status as a model of democracy in West Africa could be compromised if the opposition charges voting fraud.
